FAPC-OSU faculty recognized by animal science

(Stillwater, Okla. – April 14, 2011) An Oklahoma State University and Robert M. Kerr Food & Agricultural Products Center faculty member received the Don Tyler Award for professional achievement at the 2011 OSU Animal Science Banquet on April 2.
Peter Muriana, FAPC food microbiologist and OSU animal science professor, was recognized for his research, teaching and public service.
“It is a great honor to receive this award,” Muriana said. “As a researcher, I am thrilled to receive the Tyler award. It is nice to know the work we are doing is recognized both locally and nationally.”
The Tyler Award distinguishes faculty in the OSU department of animal science. The first award was given to Doyle Chambers in 1962.
“It is a great honor to join the ranks of the previously decorated faculty who have received this award,” Muriana said.
Before coming to OSU, Muriana worked for Nabisco Brands, Inc., and as a faculty member at Purdue University. Muriana received his B.S. in biology from Fairfield University and M.S. and Ph.D. in food science/biotechnology from North Carolina State University.
“OSU and the FAPC have positioned individuals, such as myself, to get involved in research in a variety of areas in local and national industry,” Muriana said. “My role at the FAPC and appointment through animal science has lent a hand in facilitating the direction of my research.”
Muriana’s research interests include detection, characterization, and inhibition of foodborne pathogens and spoilage organisms.
“My research at the FAPC includes the characterization of pathogens and spoilage microorganisms, the application of inhibitors of microbial growth, the implementation of postprocess measures to kill microbial pathogens, the use of pasteurization for liquid egg, and molecular approaches to characterize foodborne pathogens,” Muriana said.
Muriana has published 34 papers in scientific journals and authored five book chapters.
Roy Escoubas, FAPC director, said it is a privilege to have a center faculty member be selected for this award.
“Dr. Muriana has done an excellent job for the food science industry and is a well-deserving recipient of the Don Tyler Award,” Escoubas. “He has assisted many Oklahoma food companies, and his research is valuable to the state’s food industry in ensuring the safety of food products."
