FAPC-OSU students rewarded by animal science

Students of Oklahoma State University’s Robert M. Kerr Food & Agricultural Products Center received recognition at the 2011 OSU Animal Science Banquet on April 2.

(Stillwater, Okla. – April 21, 2011) Students of Oklahoma State University’s Robert M. Kerr Food & Agricultural Products Center received recognition at the 2011 OSU Animal Science Banquet on April 2.

Camillia Bottini, FAPC graduate student, received the Ned and Essie Raun Agrosystems Scholarship, which recognizes international graduate students for their efforts in agriculture advancements.

“It is a great opportunity to be recognized with this award,” Bottini said. “This scholarship will assist me in achieving my career goals.”

Bottini works in the FAPC microbiology lab under the supervision of Dr. Peter Muriana, FAPC food microbiologist. Bottini’s graduate research focuses on the evaluation of antimicrobials allowed for use in meats against common pathogens. She anticipates graduation in December 2011.

Undergraduate students, Zach Robertson and Eldon Campbell, were recognized with awards and scholarships on behalf of the department of animal science.

Robertson received with the Lowell E. Walters Award for his excellence in meats judging. Robertson is set to graduate in May 2011 with a degree in food science and industry emphasis. Following graduation, Robertson will pursue a master’s degree at the University of Missouri while coaching the meats judging team.

“It is a great honor to be recognized as an outstanding meats judger,” Robertson said. “ This award signifies accomplishments and success received through the year.”

Campbell is will graduate in May 2011 with a degree in animal science with a business option. Campbell will return to his family’s farm in Enid, Okla., and plans to pursue a career in agriculture.

“I am honored to receive this award,” Campbell said. “It has been a lifelong goal of mine to be on the meats judging team at OSU.”

Robertson and Campbell work in the FAPC pilot plant under the instruction of Jake Nelson and Kyle Flynn.

Roy Escoubas, FAPC director, said it is an honor for students employed at the center to be recognized.

“It brings great joy to the FAPC when students are rewarded for their efforts,” Escoubas said. “We wish these students the best in their future endeavors.”
