Bill Raun, Regents professor in plant and soil sciences at Oklahoma State University, was recognized with the Excellence in Graduate Student Advising and Mentoring Award at the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Scholarships and Awards Banquet March 31.

The award recognizes and promotes exceptional graduate advising and mentoring.

“Dr. Raun is a well-deserved recipient of this award due to the countless hours he spends both inside and outside of the classroom to prepare his graduate students for their chosen field,” said Cynda Clary, CASNR associate dean of academic programs. “His selfless nature and constant support of his students and colleagues make him an invaluable resource and mentor.”

During his 15 years at OSU, Raun has served as the major advisor for 25 doctoral and 50 master’s students. Thirty-seven of those 75 were international students. Additionally, he has provided international experiences to 100 students during 39 study abroad trips.

Raun has published 194 refereed journal articles, three books, 15 book chapters and maintained nine websites.

Brian Arnall, a fellow associate professor in plant and soil sciences, believes there is no better cheerleader or supporter for a graduate student than Raun. Arnall said Raun’s energy and passion for student’s success is indescribable.

“It is without exaggeration that I can say I owe my career and success to Dr. Raun,” Arnall said.

Jeff Edwards, head of the department of plant and soil sciences, said Raun is held in high regard by students long after they graduate from the university.

“Dr. Raun prepares his students for the real world, and their success is a testament to his mentoring ability,” Edwards said. “This begins with his emphasis on professionalism and his high standards for graduate students.”
