Two OSU students named Truman Scholarship finalists
OSU juniors Adrienne Blakey and Kayla Dunn have been named finalists for the 2020 Truman Scholarship, the premiere graduate scholarship for aspiring public leaders in the United States. The pair, both graduates of Stillwater High School, will participate in a regional interview on March 11 in Denver before the winners are announced April 15.

Transformational gift from alumni leads to new name for OSU’s agriculture college
Oklahoma State University and alumni Kayleen and Larry Ferguson announced a $50 million gift from the Ferguson Family Foundation that will transform the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources in a variety of ways, including a new name. Pending approval next week from the Oklahoma A&M Board of Regents, the college will be renamed the Ferguson College of Agriculture in recognition of the gift, which is among the largest in OSU’s nearly 130-year history.
Alumni Early Career Achievement Award Applications Now Accepted
The CASNR Alumni Board is seeking nominations for men and women who have attained prominence through their efforts in agriculture, natural resources, life sciences, or other related areas of science, business, education or government and public service early in their careers. To be eligible, a nominee must possess an undergraduate or graduate degree from CASNR and have earned a bachelor's degree within the past 15 years. Nominations are due by January 31st.
Going Global: OSU student shares food safety abroad
While the United States is recognized across the planet as an agricultural powerhouse, it is sometimes easy to forget other countries struggle to have the same products and emphasis on food safety as what can be found in this country. Jaymee Zabienski, an Oklahoma State University biosystems and agricultural engineering graduate student from Tulsa, Oklahoma, served two weeks this summer as the needed volunteer on a Farmer-to-Farmer mission trip to Jamaica for the U.S. Agency for International Development. This project was designed to help budding agricultural-based Jamaican companies create a facility meeting the standards of Good Manufacturing Practices and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points, while also expanding the economic opportunity of their rural community.

Oklahoma State University has announced the inaugural members of the new Oklahoma State Scholars Society, the university’s premier scholar development program that offers major financial support and broad scholarly opportunities to top-performing in-state students. Two CASNR students, Amanda Bolinger and Ashley Howard, were named as members of this prestigious society.
OSU students awarded $166,500 in Wentz research grants
The following CASNR Students were awarded Wentz research grants for the 2019-2020 academic year: Ashley Gin, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Lyndee Branen, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Omid Darbandi, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Elizabeth Dworkin, Plant and Soil Sciences. Each Wentz Research Scholar will receive $4,500 to conduct an original research project under the guidance of an OSU faculty member during the 2019-2020 academic year.
Oklahoma State Women’s Rodeo Team named Central Plains Region Champions
Oklahoma State University’s Women’s Rodeo Team recently claimed the Central Plains Region championship, securing them a trip to the College National Finals Rodeo. The CNFR takes place in Casper, Wyoming, June 9-15, 2019. The women’s rodeo team will compete against the champion teams from 11 regions across the nation.
OSU students win notable scholarship honors
Jeremy Hicks, 24, an OSU sophomore from Owasso, Oklahoma, who is pursuing a degree in agriculture education with a minor in Japanese, has been named a Boren Scholar. Boren Scholarships, an initiative of the National Security Education Program, provides funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America and the Middle East.
Women for OSU make ‘presence’ felt at symposium
Women for OSU recognized Peggy Helmerich as the 2019 Philanthropist of the Year and honored 10 student scholars at its 11th annual symposium. The event drew more than 500 people and focused on the theme of “presence,” featuring New York Times best-selling author Amy Cuddy as the keynote speaker.
CASNR undergraduate presenting research at global event
Oklahoma State University environmental science major Rainee DeRoin loves all things water. For the past two years the 21-year-old junior has monitored seven small watersheds — including lands that have eastern redcedar, prairie and switchgrass — at OSU’s 1,820-acre Cross Timbers Experimental Range southwest of Stillwater as part of a long-running research study. DeRoin has been selected to present her findings at the Second World Congress on Undergraduate Research this May in Germany.

Greenhouse Learning Center to provide cutting-edge educational opportunities at OSU
The footprint of Oklahoma State University is ever evolving to continually meet the changing needs of students. With a groundbreaking ceremony this morning, students in OSU’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, will soon have access to a new facility that will better prepare them to enter the professional workforce. The Greenhouse Learning Center, a $6 million facility, will replace and improve functions of OSU’s existing teaching greenhouses that have been in use for decades. Construction is expected to be completed in fall 2019.
OSU’s Department of Animal Science shows progression with new name
The Department of Animal Science within Oklahoma State University’s Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources will change its name to the Department of Animal and Food Sciences. The change, effective July 1, was made after input from departmental faculty, staff, current students and alumni.

Graduate students across the globe conduct research, compile their findings, crunch the data and write their papers. Oftentimes, before they take that plunge into the research world, they do not understand what they are getting into. This is true, too, for students at Oklahoma State University. However, thanks to a collaboration between OSU’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station, undergraduate students can get a taste of research before committing the next couple years of their lives to science.

Oklahoma State University student Sage Becker has been awarded a 2018 Goldwater Scholarship, one of the most prestigious national honors recognizing high achievers who seek research careers in the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering. Becker is a junior from Keota, Iowa, majoring in animal science with a concentration in animal biotechnology and a minor in biochemistry.

Jerry Ott, a humble family man who uses words like honor, respect, responsibility and service, has worn many hats over the years. However, the educator, administrator, veteran and 1970 graduate of Oklahoma State University had on a new type of cap Dec. 16. While he completed his requirements for his bachelor’s degrees in vocational agriculture and agronomy in the fall of 1969, his opportunity to walk across the stage was taken away when learned he was going to be drafted into the military.

CASNR Student participates in year-long CABLE leadership training
The U.S. Department of Agriculture funded a new project to create a nationwide organization of universities to train future bioeconomy workforce. The project, Consortium for Advanced Bioeconomy Leadership Education, is a partnership of 20 colleges and universities, including Oklahoma State University. Joanna Quiah, a junior biosystems and agricultural engineering student, is OSU’s delegate for the 2017-2018 CABLE program.
OSU encourages students to study beyond Stillwater
From Iceland to the Virgin Islands, Oklahoma State University offers students several options for personal and professional growth as they live and study across the U.S. and around the world. Environmental sciences student Emily Hyde completed a semester in Reykjavik, Iceland, through OSU’s reciprocal exchange program. She took courses on climate change and the ecology of Iceland. She also had the opportunity to attend an international arctic research conference.

CASNR student awarded Fulbright for research in Germany
Sydney Stewart, an undergraduate student at Oklahoma State University, has been awarded a Fulbright U.S. Student Award to conduct research in Germany during the 2017-2018 academic year. The Fulbright program places U.S. students in countries around the world where they act as an ambassador for the United States, work with research advisers, and learn about the people and culture. Stewart, a graduate of Life School Red Oak Secondary School in Red Oak, Texas, is scheduled to graduate from OSU in May with a bachelor’s degree in animal science (pre-veterinary option) and a minor in microbiology.

Due to the generosity of the Lew Wentz Foundation, 71 Oklahoma State University undergraduates representing every college on the Stillwater campus will receive a total of $228,500 in financial aid for the 2015-16 academic year. CASNR Students Graduate with Honors
The Oklahoma State University Honors College presented its degrees and awards to 178 students during a hooding ceremony in April in the Student Union Ballroom. The degree is the highest that can be presented with the undergraduate degree and students donned the Honors College hood during OSU’s commencement ceremony. Of those recognized, 24 were students from the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.

Oklahoma State University student Maeghan Murie of Cleveland, Okla., has been selected as a Udall scholar, making her the recipient of one of the nation’s most prestigious undergraduate awards. Murie, a junior majoring in chemistry and biochemistry and molecular biology, joins the ranks of 14 former winners from OSU who received the scholarship, which awards up to $5,000 annually to defray the cost of undergraduate education while honoring the legacies of Morris and Steward Udall. Of those from OSU who have received the award, eight in addition to Murie have been students in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.

OSU to rename animal science arena in memory of Robert Totusek
Oklahoma State University’s Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources is renaming the OSU Animal Science Arena in memory of Robert. E. Totusek, who passed away in June. A 38-year faculty member of the university, “Dr. Tot” as he was affectionately called by faculty, staff, students and alumni coached great livestock teams and performed landmark beef cattle research.
Oklahoma State University names Ochsner and Wilson to prestigious professorship
Tyson Ochsner and Gail Wilson of Oklahoma State University’s Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources have been named Sarkeys Distinguished Professorship recipients. The DASNR professorship is awarded in recognition of individuals who have achieved a significant level of excellence while at OSU, as determined by a selection committee. The action was approved Oct. 24 by the Oklahoma A&M Board of Regents.
Proposed OSU food-safety program will benefit both students and food industry
With a growing demand for safe quality food products, the need for food industry companies to engage in food-safety programs is more important than ever. An advisory board of OSU’s Robert M. Kerr Food & Agricultural Products Center recognized this need and provided more than $1 million as a lead gift toward a $3.4 million fundraising goal to create an OSU food-safety program, which includes a curriculum proposal for a food-safety option and a food-safety faculty position in the department of animal science.

Agricultural education student teaching cohort begins at cooperating schools
Seventeen agricultural education seniors from Oklahoma State University recently began a 12-week student teaching program at 15 agricultural education programs across Oklahoma and Ohio.
Agricultural education student earns national scholarship
Lee Stewart, an agricultural education student at Oklahoma State University, has been selected for the Upper Division Agricultural Education Scholarship from the National Association of Agricultural Educators. The $750 scholarship is awarded to upper level agricultural education majors to help offset expenses during their student teaching experience. Fifteen students from across the United States were selected based on their academic performance as well as on leadership and service activities.
Fourteen CASNR Students Named McKnight Leader Scholars
Alumni Ross and Billie McKnight are realizing their vision through a unique program that has already provided more than 133 student leaders with scholarships to Oklahoma State University in the last three years. The program recruits students from rural communities, outside Oklahoma, to attend OSU. There are 51 McKnight Leader Scholars for the 2014-15 academic year. Of those selected for the upcoming year, 14 are students with majors in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
OSU welcomes 60 to the Freshman Research Scholars program
Sixty incoming Oklahoma State University freshmen from 10 states have each received a $1,000 scholarship to pursue an early, hands-on introduction to university-level research this year. Representing 33 majors from aerospace engineering to zoology, the students will participate in the Freshman Research Scholars (FRS) program which has been recognized by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education for excellence in undergraduate research programming.
