Thomas Kuzmic, natural resource ecology and management professor at Oklahoma State University, was recognized with the Award for Excellence in Teaching at the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Scholarships and Awards Banquet on March 31.

A part of the OSU Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management for nearly 30 years, Kuzmic has taught several courses and is credited with a large portion of the department’s curriculum development.

He advises 50 undergraduate students and teaches seven courses.

“Throughout his career at OSU, Dr. Kuzmic has spent countless hours developing course materials and interacting with students,” said Cynda Clary, CASNR associate dean of academic programs. “His unwavering enthusiasm for teaching and dedication to students make him deserving of this award.”

Kuzmic also advises the OSU chapter of the Society of American Foresters and serves as faculty representative for the OSU Academic Integrity Panel and faculty mentor for the Wentz Scholars Program.

“My foremost challenge and responsibility as a teacher is to serve as a catalyst to enable and empower students to meet their individual aspirations and potential for becoming productive members of society and successful professionals in their chosen career paths,” Kuzmic said.

Students appreciate Kuzmic for his dedication to students and passion for learning.

“Dr. Kuzmic is the most committed professor I have ever met,” a student said in a letter of nomination for Kuzmic. “He is always eager to teach and helps inspire students to reach their full potential on a daily basis.”

Karen Hickman, natural resource ecology and management professor, said she is fortunate to have Kuzmic as a colleague and friend. And she is constantly impressed with the sustained success of his teaching program.

“The energy, freshness and enthusiasm he brings to his teaching responsibilities are beyond compare – even as he approaches his third decade of teaching,” Hickman said.
