STILLWATER, Okla. – Dwayne Cartmell, a professor in the department of agricultural education, communications and leadership at Oklahoma State University, was recognized with the Award for Excellence in Teaching at the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Scholarships and Awards Banquet March 29.

The award recognizes and promotes exceptional teaching by a CASNR faculty member.

“Dr. Cartmell doesn’t view teaching as a semester commitment, rather a lifetime commitment as he encourages students to be lifelong learners,” said Cynda Clary, CASNR associate dean of academic programs. “His unique approach to courses and his ability to develop students’ creativity and technical skills at the same time make him an elite teacher.”

Since he joined the faculty in 2001, Cartmell has been recognized as an outstanding teacher by faculty, staff and students, said Rob Terry, agricultural education, communications and leadership department head.

“The level of experience, expertise and passion for excellence he displays is truly exceptional,” Terry said. “I find his contributions and successes as a teacher to be nothing short of amazing. We are fortunate to have him as a teacher and colleague in CASNR.”

Cartmell has taught 14 different undergraduate classes and three graduate classes. He developed five of these courses from their inception. One of these innovative courses is a photo tour, during which students spend two weeks of their summer in southwest Oklahoma developing photography skills alongside Cartmell. This spring semester, he took students to Costa Rica for another photo tour experience.

“I have a strong personal commitment to intellectual achievement and personal growth of all of my students,” Cartmell said.

Cartmell has received teaching awards from the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture, the Association for Communication Excellence, and the American Association for Agricultural Education. He also was recognized by OSU with the Regent’s Distinguished Teaching Award.

“Having him as a professor means being taught by someone who believes in you and encourages you to do your absolute best,” one of Cartmell’s students said. “He is always incredibly patient and does his best to help each student succeed.”
