CASNR SCHOLARSHIPS & AWARDS
2019 CASNR Louis and Betty Gardner Outstanding Senior
Sage Becker, an animal science major from Keota, Iowa, is the 2018 Louis and Betty Gardner CASNR Outstanding Senior. She is the daughter of Brian and Rebecca Becker.
During her time as an undergraduate student, Sage has been an extremely active participant in undergraduate research. She was a member of the Animal Science Freshman Research Scholars program, the Lew Wentz Research Scholars program and was named a Niblack Research Scholar in 2017. She was recently named a 2018 Barry S. Goldwater Scholar, one of the most prestigious national honors recognizing high achievers who seek research careers in STEM fields. Sage is OSU’s 21st Goldwater Scholar and the first ever named from CASNR.
In addition to being a member of the OSU Honors College, Sage currently serves as an ambassador for the Office of Scholar Development and Undergraduate Research, and as an undergraduate teaching assistant in the OSU Department of Animal and Food Sciences. She is also a member of Block and Bridle and Alpha Zeta. In 2017, Sage served as secretary for the OSU Swine Club.
Her hard work in the classroom is evidenced by her 4.0 GPA — an accomplishment that has given her recognition on the President’s Honor Roll many times. Sage was recently selected as a 2019 OSU Senior of Significance.
“I have been able to embrace, and have enjoyed being active in, all three points of the DASNR triangle by excelling academically, conducting research and bringing research recognition to CASNR, and by researching out and working with the youth of Oklahoma,” Becker said.

2019 CASNR Charles and Magda Browning Outstanding Freshman Award

Cathy Mapes, an animal science major from Alva, Oklahoma, is the 2019 Charles and Magda Browning CASNR Outstanding Freshman. She is the daughter of Jeff and Michelle Mapes.
Cathy currently is a Leader of Excellence in Animal and Food Sciences, serves on the Student Alumni Board for the OSU Alumni Association and recently served on the Homecoming Steering Committee. During her freshman year, she was a member of the President’s Leadership Council and on the Freshman Representative Council.
Cathy was named an OSU Top Ten Freshmen Woman and has been recognized on the Dean’s and President’s Honor Rolls.
“A defining moment is characterized as an experience that fundamentally changes an individual," Mapes said. "This collective moment was my freshman year where I stepped out of my comfort zone and developed into an independent, selfless leader. The sea of orange has inspired me to become the well-rounded individual that I am.”
